Stormy Weather

Friday was slow, but decent. The weather was terrible. One friend who was supposed to show texted something to the tune of "the city is paralyzed in the grip of this storm." That's a little much. Really people, we don't even use cars in this city.

Here is a version of Stormy Weather by Doris Troy. It's great and very unique for this widely covered tune. She turns it into a blues yeller. In my once-a-year acoustic sets I play Stormy Weather, Doris Troy style.

Friday Night : Bar Reis

I'll be DJing my usual 5 HOUR SET at Bar Reis this Friday night. Come witness the marathon. If you come early you get lots of classic reggae, Donald Byrd spirituals and all sorts of slow jams. Really, the whole set spans all sorts of styles----I'm promising myself that I will play the dubstep I've been holding back(I'm not sure y'all are ready). This week I'm gonna play some classic dancehall as well (including a refix) as some remixes of Alvin Robinson and Andre Williams which you can listen to or download. Come on down and listen to my mix in the meantime.

Here's something somber and deep for you----something you will only hear if you are at bar reis by 8:30 on Friday.

The venue double-booked. There is no dj sunshine tonight. See you next time. ::shit-eating-grin::

Hey y'all,

So I'm DJing Bar Reis tonight instead of my usual Saturday.
Also, I'll be at Bar Reis every other Saturday instead of every week.
Tonight? Well....I'm planning on playing a lot of disco. Barry White.

You can thank the kitchen staff of Cheryl's Global Soul in prospect heights and the downturn in the global economy for that.

manna from the street : smoke and no smoke

Okay, so as I was walking home from work on this rainy day I came across a stack of records lying in the rain. So, as usual, I checked them out. Endgame, I now have a Sly & The Family Stone Anthology (double LP), Eddie Kendrick's album goin' up in smoke (SEALED!), a Bobby Womack LP, an Isley Brothers LP, a Gladys Knight LP and a bunch of other stuff.

Below is a vinyl rip of goin' up in smoke

I've had my ear on Kendricks recently because Armed Snobbery posted the Kendricks track that was sampled in the Lil' Wayne song Let The Beat Build. Anyway, as I'm sure you've guessed the Kendricks track is ridiculous and the Wayne song mediocre, BUT WAIT! I'm not hatin', that Mrs Officer is definitely on my playlist right now---it's got a nice hook and the lyrics are so wrong they're right.

And here's some of the "other stuff"
Sarah Vaughan - No Smoke Blues

This is pretty racy (sorry for the 'mom'cabulary) for Sarah Vaughan and the first time I have heard her sing the blues.

And the "smoke" thing is purely coincidence.

On "smoke," the above is some smoke puff advertising I witnessed after the A train to Rockaway Beach broke down a few summers back.

Saturdays @ Bar Reis

This is a weekly event. Set starts around 8:30-9pm and goes 'till 2am or later.
I'll play soul, reggae, funk, and hip-hop and disco....pop ----current, classics and rarities.

Come, get down, go to all-night diner after.

Venue: Bar Reis is on 5th Avenue between 5th St and 6th St in Park Slope.
The bar has two floors. Upstairs, a long wooden bar and downstairs, a lounge with a pool table and dancefloor? (that depends on you). There is also a backyard with picnic tables for you smokers and polar bears.

This week's top 5
1. Checkmates Ltd - Got 2 See You Soon
2. Talib Kweli - Hot Thing (Produced by
3. Dawn Penn - No no no
4. Nickodemus & Quantic - Mi Swing Es Tropical
5. Erykah Badu - Cleva (Captain Planet Remix)

I'm trying to think up some sort of promo for this week.
I had two ideas:
1. Give out a free ep with your second drink
2. Free dum dums

Ideas people?

Below is a track of mine from a few years ago. Can you identify the horn sample?
The title is a hint.
